Goodbye Guanajuato, Hello Santa Fe

30 Mar

You and I have memories
Longer than the road that stretches out ahead.

We’re on our way home
We’re going home.

                                                 Writers: Paul McCartney, John Lennon

Guanajuato is a tiny gem of a city in the mountains of Mexico. The city is colorful. It is slow. It is welcoming. The “Buenos Dias”, “Buenos Tardes” from our neighbors in the callejon will be much missed.

We have lived our time infinitesimally here, the real goal of our travel. We have had the time to really stop and listen and see the way people live. Writing has been magical here. The words spill out without effort chronicling our days. The beauty of the streets was made for pictures.

Guanajuatenses ask us when we will be back. We demure, unsure if and when it will be. But we have met so many people who come and stay, year after year, becoming part of the cityscape. We will miss the bells, the call of the gas man in the callejon, the sunlight on the cobbles, the sound of Spanish music in the evening, the yellow walls of the basilica, the long meandering walks, the coffee at Conquistador, the mole poblano, and the smell of the orange blossoms in the morning.

Now, were going home to Santa Fe; to Trolley and Fantan waiting for us with wagging tails; to our adobe house sitting silently; to the wide open blue sky; to the red rocks and cactus; to the New Mexico sun; to our good friends.

We will remember Guanajuato and the people we know here with warmth and affection. We will remember.
