We say goodbye to Malta astonished at the history found in these small islands. We came expecting an Arabian-Italian culture. We leave understanding the long history of a besieged island influenced by many cultures since the Phoenicians. And we learned of a people steadfast in their love of their unique and ancient nation.
We saw Neolithic temples and art reaching back 5000 years. We saw Baroque churches and the incomparable St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Caravaggio’s paintings stunned us with their visceral beauty. The island of Gozo soothed us with its slow pace of life and authentic Malteze culture. We have enjoyed our time here in Naxxar being part of a village that is overtly Catholic and proud of their church and deeply held beliefs. We will most remember our ramble off The Roman Road through farm fields of barley on a brilliantly sunny day.
Now we are on to new adventures in 2018…Cuenca, Ecuador? Sevilla, Spain? Montevideo, Uruguay? a barge on the rivers of France? We have not decided yet. Be surprised and join us next year on another Medflies’ adventure.
