Papeete…Eglise de Dames

7 Jan

DSC05144We were in Papeete, Tahiti on a layover between Auckland and Los Angeles. It was Sunday so we had the chance to go to church and hear a Tahitian choir. If you have never heard Tahitian harmonies this is not an event to be missed.

One of the delightful sights in church is the church ladies’ “Eglise de Dames” hats. They are wild confections of straw and dyed straw, with accents of varying colors. Many wear a woven raffia flower in their long hair pulled back into a tidy bun.

We decided to approach these ladies after church. I used my sad french and had wonderful luck.  Every one we approached responded with a “Oui.” Here they are in all their Sunday glory.
