How do you know when it is spring where you are? Is it the change in the light? snowdrops poking up through the snow? the first crocus? the first cactus blossom? Here in Guanajuato it is painting ladders springing up from sidewalks and down from the tops of buildings.
Painting in Guanajuato is a precarious business. Ladders are propped on the sidewalk with pedestrians brushing them as they pass. Ladders hang down from parapets held by two slim hooks. The painters descend from the roof with their hand tools to reach as far as they can without falling off. Then, reluctantly ascend and move the ladder right or left to a fresh space.
