We are in Noto, Sicily for 10 days. This is the view from my chaise lounge on the terrace of our apartment in Noto. We ate dinner on the terrace last night. The warm breeze was still stirring at 7 p.m. as we drank red wine from nearby Avola and had the fresh pasta and sauce that Dana made. The tomatoes are from Pachino, a little town south of here. I have missed that taste since we were here five years ago.
The center of Noto is a walking street laid with smooth, squared stones. People are strolling most of the day and night up and down this promenade, tourists as well as locals. Our first morning found us there, straight off the boat and needing strong Italian coffee.
Rosario, our waiter explained that breakfast in Sicily was brioche and granita (a kind of fruit sorbet) or gelato (ice cream.) The brioche is sliced with the gelato as the filling. I had chocolate and hazelnut on mine. And I asked for hot chocolate but Rosario just brought me a whole coffee cup of chocolate. I ate that too with an espresso. Dana was more disciplined and just ordered hot tea and one brioche, the piker.
After our Italian “breakfast” we continued our strolling and found the Noto Cathedral in the center of the piazza.
We walked all the way to the city wall, leaned over and this view was on the other side, a stone’s throw from lively Noto.
I love Sicily. So glad to be back.
