A Sicilian Goatherd

28 Apr

Herding on a bike

We were out for a walk along the Ciane River and down the road came this herd of goats followed by this ancient goatherd on a bike.  The bike looked like it was on its last legs as well. The goats panicked as they passed us running and jumping over each other.  They took a sharp left toward their grazing field and the farmer stopped to talk with us. He had on a old suit with a cap. Stood about 4′ 11″ and had one tooth, on the right side. He chatted away in Italian.  Said the goats were running because they were hungry and just saw the field where they were eating lunch. I was petting his beautiful herding dog and he said the she was 15…old like him.  Pretty amazing we got all this when he was speaking Italian, eh?  Many arm gestures were involved.  He was willing to keep talking, goatherding must be pretty solitary, but we said “Ciao.”

He rattled off across the open field on his bike.
