What do you say when people ask where you are from? Here we say we are from New Mexico in the U.S. We are New Mexicans. But the people of Valparaiso do not call themselves Valparaisons. They call themselves “porteños.” Porteños means “people of the port” and is a term unique to Valparaiso in all of Chile. They so love their city by the sea it is an integral part of their nomenclature.
