The Fish Market

11 Feb

DSC05853Valparaiso is known for its seafood. One of the city’s fish markets is right on the beach where the boats dock each day.  The seafood stalls are sandwiched underneath a boardwalk that looks out over the pier where the catch is unloaded early in the morning.

DSC05841The Saturday we were there the market was full of local people shopping for dinner. Crabs, eels, shrimp, urchins, clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, salmon and many other local fish varieties were laid out for purchase.

Fish mongers will cut and trim the fish to your custom order while you look on.

Like the city, the market has its own art on the walls and the boats.

We were delighted to see sea lions frolicking in the surf under the pier.  They seemed to be riding back and forth in a group, tumbling over and under each other as the surfed crashed in and out of the support pillars. Above them flocks of gulls circled and cried out looking for fish scraps.

DSC05827After walking through the market we ambled down the beach to eat fresh seafood soup at a shoreline restaurant. The sun was hot and brilliant on this day in Chile.
