We say goodbye to Malta astonished at the history found in these small islands. We came expecting an Arabian-Italian culture. We leave understanding the long history of a besieged island influenced by many cultures since the Phoenicians. And we learned of a people steadfast in their love of their unique and ancient nation.
We saw Neolithic temples and art reaching back 5000 years. We saw Baroque churches and the incomparable St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Caravaggio’s paintings stunned us with their visceral beauty. The island of Gozo soothed us with its slow pace of life and authentic Malteze culture. We have enjoyed our time here in Naxxar being part of a village that is overtly Catholic and proud of their church and deeply held beliefs. We will most remember our ramble off The Roman Road through farm fields of barley on a brilliantly sunny day.
Now we are on to new adventures in 2018…Cuenca, Ecuador? Sevilla, Spain? Montevideo, Uruguay? a barge on the rivers of France? We have not decided yet. Be surprised and join us next year on another Medflies’ adventure.
I am sorry I was not in town for tour Travel Bug presentation. How do you find your places to stay ?
Crawford Best
Hi Crawford, You didn’t miss our presentation. It is scheduled for Saturday, May 27 at 5 p.m. so it is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Come if you can. Jill
I hope you’re settling in back home well. We loved seeing you and hope we get to see you more soon! Have fun planning your 2018 travels! These adventures are truly inspiring for what we could do in our retirement.
It was so great to meet the boys and to see you and John again. Think about coming to Santa Fe. Henry and Sebastian can be “Cow Punchers.”
Your travels are delicious! 2018…how do you choose among all those beautiful places? Hope to see you in SFe in mid July!
Loved seeing Dana’s beautiful photography and Jill’s wonderful written descriptions of each place you visited and sights seen and experienced. Can’t wait to hear where in the world you will be in 2018! Safe and smooth travels as you travel home.
We’re home now. Travels were hilariously unsmooth. But Fantan was so happy to see us when we got home it made it all worth it. Thank you for the compliments on Dana’s photography and my writing. It is one of the best projects we have ever done together. Seeing everyday through the eyes of our family and friends makes us see differently and the writing is so much fun. Where do you want to go when your traveling again? Oh I know Boston and New York.
Thanks for sharing your adventure. And welcome home
