The Working Man

10 Mar

We were walking along the street in a more urban neighborhood in Lecce and saw these workman sitting on a beam taking a break. As we got closer they didn’t seem to be changing positions.

And then we saw why. It was a sculpture. And the extraordinary thing was that they were wearing real clothes. We could see their pants blowing in the wind.

Reminds me of a group of men sitting on a steel beam in NYC in the 40s (?). One could see everything beneath them Boy were they up there. One false move and good-bye. The minute I sawyour photograph I thought they don’t look real. Someone has a wicked sense of humor! And, real talent. Suppose they got the clothes at Savers! So, how’s the food? More snow here in Eldo. Terry

I love traveling vicariously through you both and seeing and learning from across the world!!

That’s the first “people” I’ve seen in your photos….and they turn out to be sculptures! Oh, that Italian sense of humor?!

Funny you should mention that Maryl. I went through all the photos we have taken since we arrived and discovered…there are no people in them. I think it is two things, 1. It is off-season. It is extremely off season as climate change has had a powerful effect here in the last three years. Our hosts told us that November and December were extremely mild, balmy temperatures and now, March is extremely cold for Puglia and Salento. So there are many fewer people in the streets and strolling. And 2. Covid has had a huge impact on Lecce. It is a place Italians and Europeans come in the spring, summer and fall to go to the beach, sit in bars and cafes and eat, eat, eat. That tourist business has dropped off precipitously. Many restaurants and bars are open for much more limited hours. People are required to have show proof of vaccination for just about everything. And masks are worn indoors and, sometimes outdoors. So people are scarce. We anticipate that changing as the weather warms and Covid rules are relaxed. The government says this will happen late this month. We are intrepid as you know and see all of this as an adventure.

If I could “post” my favorite double thumbs up png here…I would. Great idea. Great execution. Love it.

What amazing “street art”! One of the guys even has a bandaid on his arm.
I’m truly enjoying your posts and my vicarious revisit to Lecce. Thanks for sharing!

Yes. I loved the bandaid. It was such a delightful surprise.
