Putto (plural, putti) are babies with wings who play the part of angelic spirits in the art of Lecce’s Baroque churches. These pudgy little angels are essential to the design of the many pillars, altars and freestanding sculptures. Carved from Lecce stone their hands hold everything from hammers to balls to peaches to scrolls and garlands. To give you a taste of what we have been seeing we offer these images of Lecce’s puttis in their splendor.

Not sure if they are all boys. Some “look” like girls. But putti may be “above” gender.
