In Alicante

8 Feb

We have arrived in Alicante and found vibrancy and palm trees. Parks are alive with people walking, bench sitting and amiably chatting. There is a sense of time in the day to stop…no rush. And we feel welcome.

We saw this sculpture …a traveler, greeted with open arms. That is our earliest sense of this place.

On one of our first evenings we walk to the harbor at sunset.

A long gallery facing the marina is lined with people waiting and watching as the sun sets over the docked boats.

All kinds of people gather here, a group of teenage girls walking fast, talking, laughing; grandmothers, babies and busking musicians; every kind of couple, some holding hands and some not. It is clear that this is a daily tradition. We are lucky to have found it on one of our first evenings here.

And then the walk home.

Hi Dede, So happy to see your post. We have two apartments for a month each this trip. The first is a modern penthouse in the center of Old Town with an amazing roof patio. The second is in a family owned apartment facing Basillica Santa Maria at the outer edge of Old Town. We have had amazing paella with rice as it’s supposed to be, stuck to the bottom of the paella pan.Yesterday, Saturday, the streets were full of families walking. The oldest generation and the youngest generation are always there perambulating at their own unique speeds.

Derek, You are consistantly our earliest poster. Your enthusiam is always appreciated. Before we arrived there was a lot of US press about overtourism in Spain. It gave us pause. We have only found warmth and welcome. The other evening a young man, our waiter, offered his arm as we departed from dinner, very gallant and sweet. Jill
