When you stay for two months in one place, grocery shopping is a daily event. We are lucky here in Alicante to have a little market across the street from our front door. (The proximity is much appreciated when we’re carrying heavy agua con gas bottles up three floors.)

The store is tiny, two aisles, but the produce is great. What we like about it is that it is very “local.” Open from early in the morning until late at night with a few breaks for family errands, we see the same faces every day.

We see Samina the most often. She does not speak English and little Spanish but we manage to communicate. When Dana comes in without me, she asks where I am. Very sweet.
There is a handlettered sign over the door as you leave, “Mashallah,” an Arabic expression used to express admiration, appreciation, or gratitude. It flows both ways, a gift of travel.
