Calle Jorge Juan 14

1 Mar

Our apartment feels like a home with a point-of-view…a place with connections tied to family history.

The apartment is right across the street from the Basilica Santa Maria. We’re on the third floor so the living room windows look out to the church. Tolling bells can be heard throughout the day as bodies ebb and flow through the plaza. The Museum of Contemporary Art and the Esplanada are short walks away.

Alvaro and Maria are our hosts. They are young and I imagine this apartment as being left to them by their grandparents. We feel right at home.

Noticing the details over the two months we’re living here seasons the trip; the workmanship in a heavy oak door hinge, a toaster the size of an anchor, hand-painted espresso cups, 19th century armoires, all center us in this place, in this trip.

Looks like a really nice place.
Not so sure about all the Church bells though.
Guess you get used to them.

The bells seem to toll randomly and just 2 to 4 rings at a time. And, luckily, they are relatively soft tones.

How lovely, Jill. It looks very “you.” How old is the building? Thank you for sharing your home with us. Today, March 1, has been quite special. This morning we had a HUGE flock of snow geese pass through and land in our neighbor’s field. I took photos and a video. Will send one of the photos. XOX

I think the building is late 19th, early 20th century. My guess is it was renovated late 20th century. The geese, spring, must have made your heart lift.

A toaster the size of an anchor, now that is excessive. Sure will manage to adjust. Lovely apartment!

These great photos show that Alvaro and Maria are blessed with you as sojourners. And visa versa.

One of the best parts of travel is meeting people from other cultures.I notice the young men are especially kind to old ladies, very courtly.

A great location. I hope the church bells don’t lose their charm after awhile.

The song of the bells is pleasant, a soft tone thank goodness. The do not ring for the hours, thank goodness. They toll randomly, four rings at a time. Quite pleasant so far. Time will tell.
