Goodbye Alicante

2 Apr

Alicante has been a slow and gentle stay for us. In 2012-2013 our first international trip was the year long trip to Siracusa, Sicily; Capetown, South Africa; Adelaide, Australia and Valparaiso, Chile. Since then we have traveled to a different country every year. And the two to three months in a different culture shifts and deepens our world view every time.

Yesterday we went to our favorite restaurant, Le Pont (The Point.) It sits in a tiny plaza in the neighborhood on the hill above our apartment. The same young woman has waited on us every visit. She speaks no English. We speak halting Spanish. When we pass by, even on days were are not eating there, she waves and calls out a warm greeting.

We were looking forward to our favorite salad but when we ordered, the essential ingredient, burrata cheese, was not to be had. Disappointed we went back to searching the menu. As we were doing this I saw her walking away from the restaurant at a fast clip to disappear around the corner of a nearby building down the alley. Interesting. About 15 minutes later, she returned carrying a big straw bag in her arms. When she came back to the table she had a huge smile. She had gone to their neighbohood cheese shop and brought back the burrata for our salads.

This welcome and kindness will be our quintessential memory of Alicante, the beautiful, little Spanish city by the sea. Adios until next year.

Our conviction to keep it small and slow deepens every year. Thank for coming with us all these years.

We are back home, exhausted, but know how lucky we are to have had the experience again this year.
