We went to visit the Necropoli di Pantalica near Sortino. It is a Byzantine, Bronze Age, burial ground created from the 13th to the 8th century BC. Over 5000 are buried in crypts among the limestone cliffs above the clear waters of the Anapo River. In many cases the graves were carved into the rock hundreds of feet above the valley floor leaving us to wonder how they raised the bodies to such a height for burial.
In contrast we visited a contemporary cemetary near Floridia. Our landlady, Gigliola Nocera told us that on May 1st there is a tradition where relatives visit graves to clean the stones and place flowers as she and her sister, Donatella, did this year, much like Day of the Dead in New Mexico, US.
