A Festival of Graffiti

14 Mar

DSC06419Graffiti is a very old form of urban art. Graffiti, most of it lewd, covered the walls of the city of ancient Rome. Today the explosive subjects and colors of graffiti art are an art movement celebrated all over the world. Valparaiso is a living gallery of graffiti and Cerro Polanco is the neighborhood at its heart.

DSC06462Walking the streets and walkways of Polanco is to appreciate graffiti. Some are pure art, some are social messages, some are creative house painting. Whatever the motivation of the artist, the end result is a visceral beauty. Here is our gallery of Cerro Polanco’s art.

And the colors were even more intense than show in the photos.

I am amazed at the energy and labor people put into this! Painting on that scale especially on the upper floors takes quite an effort. I wonder if they need the permission of the residents to do this.

I am sure they do ask. People even hire people to decorate their homes and entryways. This art is an intrinsic part of Valparaiso.
